Caller/Cuer of the Year

The caller/cuer of the year is selected from nominations made by the local dance community for callers and cuers that they feel have been exemplary in their endeavors to promote and enhance square and round dancing in the current year.  The selection is made by the HSRDC board, District Directors and prior recipients of the award through secret ballot.

This year’s winner has been calling for over 27 years.  He is the club caller for several clubs in this area and visits other clubs when invited, both in the Houston area and around the state.  You can also find him willingly volunteering to call when asked for benefits and exhibitions and such.

With his great singing voice and smooth choreography, he keeps the dancers moving and having fun wherever he calls.  I can’t imagine that there’s anyone here who has not danced with him.  And I also can’t imagine how many miles he puts on his vehicle every year driving to dances.

We are proud to present the HSRDC 2025 Caller/Cuer of the Year award to the Cowboy Caller, Mr. Gary Sanders.  Unfortunately, Gary just had back surgery and is unable to be here with us tonight.  But we’ll be sure to present his award to him as soon as he’s back on the circuit.

Below is a note from Gary’s heart:

To the Houston Square & Round Dance Council, and all the
Houston area clubs and dancers, I would like to take this
opportunity to say an huge thank you for voting me as
Caller Of The Year, 2025. This is such an honor for me, and
one that I will never forget. I wish I could have been at the
Hoedown this year, but health issues kept me from attending.
Square Dance has been my passion for many years, and now
winning this award will fuel that passion even more and I will
try to serve our dance community to the best of my ability.
Again from the bottom of my heart, THANK YOU. I love you all,
and looking forward to seeing you in a square somewhere!

Gary Sanders
